Edward Way Westlake

Brigadier General Edward Westlake (Ret) age 87, of Fairfield Plantation, Villa Rica died Monday, January 14, 2008 in Piedmont Newnan Hospital. General Westlake was born March 21, 1920 the son of the late Edward James Westlake and Lillian Bollenhach Westlake. He was a career military officers and decorated soldier. General Westlake entered the United States Army in 1941, enlisting the day following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served under General Douglas MacArthur in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He attended NYU for several years, served his country admirably for over thirty years, twenty three of those years in the Georgia Army National Guard from 1946-1973 where he attained the rank of Brigadier General in the 48th Armored Division. General Westlake was a member of The International Mensa Society, The Buckhead 50, The Coast Guard Auxiliary of Miami, FL, and the prestigious Gate City Guard of Atlanta. In April of 1959 General Westlake served as Foreman for The Fulton County Grand Jury that was charged with investigating corrupt Atlanta Businessman H. Chandler Jones and his ties to former Governor Marvin Griffinâ€™s administration . General Westlake was offered a bribe to make the state probe go away and reported the attempt to the Solicitor Generalâ€™s office setting up a sting operation that caught Atlanta business H. Chandler Jones, red handed. General Westlake was praised as a hero and commended by Governor Ernest Vandiver. The event made State and National News. General Westlake was also an Eagle Scout and attended Midway Macedonia Baptist Church. Survivors include his daughter and sons -in-law, Virginia Westlake and Fred Green, Fairfield Plantation, Barbara and Jim Kenny, Odenville, AL, Anita Westlake, East Point, sons and daughter-in-law, Edward and Linda Westlake, Bryon Center, Michigan, Scot and Andrea Westlake, Murrayville, GA and caretaker Michele Alfonso, Newman, Besides his parents his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Ardath Hecking Westlake on January 13, 1988 and granddaughter, Wendy Michele Nolan, on February 20, 1997 Funeral Services will be held on Friday January 18, 2008, 1:00 pm at Midway Macedonia Baptist Church with Pastor Todd Wright officiating. Pallbearers will include Jim Carter, Adrian Ashmore, Greg Allen, Chuck Griffith, Chris Green, and Zach Green. Visitation will be held Thursday January 17, 2008 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at J. Collins Funeral Home . Internment services will be held Wednesday February 13, 2008 in Arlington National Cemetery with full Military Honors.
